A newborn mini session is a quick and easy way to capture the essence of a newborn without all the hassle. For this family, The images were all taken in their foyer. No need to straighten the whole house, or even need a large space. They wanted to incorporate some sentimental items since both of their fathers had passed away. The flannel fabric is actually a robe that one of their dad’s wore, and the maroon fabric is an old fishing shirt that another wore. It is so special to me to be included on heirloom portraits that will be cherished for a lifetime. As you will see, in a newborn mini session, we can add variety by changing the type of wrap, head band/bonnet, and prop. Usually these sessions last one hour, and the baby is so comfy and cozy because they are swaddled nearly the entire time. This is the perfect session if you want all of the focus to be on baby!
This family has been with me for so long. I love that they now squeeze me in when they are visiting family in N.C. (they live in Texas currently). I love catching up with them, and their little girls are just too cute. It doesn’t seem like too long ago that we were doing the maternity session of their oldest daughter.. and now she runs up to me saying, ‘hey miss Amy!” This is one of my favorite parts of photographing maternity, newborns, and beyond. I love watching them grow into their own personalities and capturing life for just a split second. On this day, the weather wasn’t fantastic, but Bass Lake in Holly Springs serves as a great backdrop for those drizzly days. The covered porch provided some adorable structural elements, and their trail worked perfectly for the woodsy-bunny theme they had for the first birthday cake.
Lifestyle newborn sessions can be combined with wrapped poses so you get the best of both worlds. The family interaction (fur babies included), but also some sweet images of just baby alone. I like the variety that this provides to families. I have always been a strong proponent of lifestyle in home sessions for newborn photography because it does capture your life in that moment. That house. Those rooms. That crib (that they probably have never slept in.. yet). I just feel like they capture so much emotion down the road and you are instantly taken back to this time in your life where you are sleep deprived and just trying to get the hang of this whole parenting thing. This is one example of a lifestyle newborn session that is combined with a wrapped portion. Congrats, C family on your new bundle of joy!
What do you do when you live in North Carolina and you never know what to expect with the weather? I swear, we sometimes have all 4 seasons in one week! And, the winter is great, but it isn’t my favorite. I’ll be honest - I need sunshine, and temperatures above 70. When this couple told me that they were pregnant with their second baby girl, I was over the moon! Their first nugget (seen below) is seriously one of the cutest kids I have ever met. Her parents are a trip, and we always have a good time at our sessions. They’re super laid back, so when it was friggin freezing outside, I suggested that we do her maternity session at a greenhouse. I waited for the crickets.. but she came back with “let’s do it.” I love her maternity dress color - it pops so lovely against the greens in the greenhouse. I think it was actually raining this day, but you’d never know it. I personally love this session and it is such a cool alternative for our crunchy, brown winter months. Special thanks to Fairview Garden Center of Raleigh for letting us have our maternity session in your awesome space! I even picked out a succulent and have managed to keep it alive (a feat in itself.)
Oh Miss Lucy! All smiles for her first birthday! To document Lucy's first birthday, we first captured some cute shots and then she got to dig into the cake.. She didn't quite "smash" the cake, but I think she enjoyed the icing. For cake smash sessions, I love keeping it simple with outfits.. after all, you're hoping they make a mess of their cake! Bloomers or simply a diaper are perfect! Mom picked up this adorable little cake from the local Walmart and we coordinated with balloons and a banner. I'd say it was a pretty successful session. Happy Birthday, Lucy!
Cake Smash Sessions are a perfect conclusion to documenting your baby's first year and can be done outside or in-studio.
