What to wear for a maternity session outdoors :: Raleigh Maternity Photography
If you’re planning on booking a maternity session outdoors, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when picking out your wardrobe. Since the focus is on your belly, you need to make sure what you choose accentuates your bump! The same tips apply when it comes to family sessions in terms of color coordination (not matchy-matchy!). But as always, pick your outfit first, and then work everyone else around it. Keep the season in mind as well in terms of length & colors. Here are a few ideas on what you can wear for your outdoor maternity session. {get ready for a whole lot of hand on belly pictures]
Wrap/Tie at Waist Dress
These dresses are typically long but hug right below your chest to make sure your baby bump is defined. The benefit of them is that they are very forgiving in other parts if you’re insecure about other areas. They are perfect year round for their longer sleeves but also breathable material. You can also usually find them in a variety of colors, which is helpful when coordinating with other family members. They do come in prints, but I tend to prefer solid color maternity dresses.
BodyCon/Fitted Maternity Dress
These are great to really show off your lovely curves. You can layer these dresses with jean jackets or lightweight cover ups. They are great for those spring & summer maternity sessions.
Long Maternity Gown
A more elegant approach is a maternity gown. They are usually longer than the wrap dress and usually do not tie at the waist. Sometimes they have lace accents, open front to expose the belly, or come off the shoulder. These definitely make a statement!
Flowy casual dress
For those who want a little texture or patterns, you can also find maternity gowns that are more casual. Notice how the patterns are not large or distracting. The other benefit of dresses like this is that they do not hug the body, so if you are looking for something that gives you a little more coverage, this might be a great option!
Form Fitting Top & Maternity jeans/Pants
…And sometimes, you just don’t want to wear a dress and that is ok! Ultimately wear what you feel comfortable in. If you wear a top, make sure it is form fitting. You can also layer your top with a cardigan, scarf, or lightweight cover up.
