Session Flow for a Raleigh Newborn Photo Session in Studio

Studio newborn sessions are meant to be easygoing and low stress. You show up, hand me your sweet baby, and then just sit back and relax while I take care of everything. All I ask is that you bring your diaper bag and be ready to feed baby if they need it. Babies usually end up eating a little more during a session than they do while you are relaxing at home—there’s a lot going on, the lights are bright, and they’re being gently moved around for different poses.

Sessions usually last anywhere from an hour to about three, depending on baby and family, but on average we’re done in about an hour and a half. I like to start in the mornings—but not super early—because I know you’ve probably been up a lot the night before. If all goes smoothly, you’ll be on your way by lunchtime.

We’ll usually start with family shots, either standing or sitting on one of my couches or benches. Holding baby for these photos often helps calm them and makes it easier for them to drift off to sleep. After that, I like to focus on siblings. By that time, they’ve had a chance to get comfortable with me and the studio, which makes for better photos. Once we’re done with family and sibling shots, I’ll turn all my attention to baby.

I have a gentle flow I like to follow with posing, which helps everything move along smoothly, but if there’s ever a pose or setup you don’t want, just say the word! This is your session, and I want you to love it.

I’m going to share some photos from a recent newborn session in my studio, just outside Raleigh, North Carolina, so you can see how the session flows and how I like to include family members. You’ll also notice I never put baby in a position that wouldn’t feel natural for them—no crazy props or risky poses here. My goal is for everything to feel simple, safe, and as natural as possible.

You will also notice that I do take a lot of detail shots of baby’s features. I love capturing the flaking skin on their hands and feet, and their sweet profile shots as well. If you’re looking for a natural newborn photographer in the Raleigh, NC area, I’d love to chat with you about a session. I usually book sessions about 2–3 months before your due date, so as soon as you’re ready to reserve your spot, just reach out through the contact form and I’ll be in touch!
