Newborn Photography Safety: What to Expect at Your Raleigh Newborn Session
When it comes to newborn photography, safety is always the top priority. Newborns are incredibly delicate, and as a parent, it’s completely normal to want reassurance that your baby is being handled with care at every step.
If you’re searching for a Raleigh newborn photographer, it’s important to understand what safety looks like during a professional newborn session and why experience matters so much. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the precautions I take in my studio to keep your baby comfortable, supported, and safe.
Health Comes First
Newborn immune systems are still developing, which means even mild illnesses can be a bigger concern during those early weeks. For that reason, I am vaccinated and I do not photograph newborns if I am feeling under the weather. If I don’t feel 100%, sessions are rescheduled — no exceptions. This is especially true for preemies or babies who have had a NICU stay.
Your baby’s health is never worth the risk, and I want parents to feel confident bringing their newborn into my Raleigh studio.
A Warm, Comfortable Studio Environment
Newborns can’t regulate their body temperature the way adults can, so maintaining a warm environment is essential. My studio is kept at a cozy temperature, and if needed, I use a space heater placed safely nearby — never too close to baby.
If the studio feels especially cool, I also use a heating pad placed under multiple layers of blankets on the posing surface. This creates gentle warmth without overheating. Babies are monitored constantly to ensure they stay comfortable — not too warm and not too cold.
In addition, I routinely wear soft cotton gloves to handle baby. This eliminates some of the startle reflex because my hands are typically cold and no body wants cold hands touching them when they’re warm and comfy!
Gentle, Safe Wrapping
Babies are wrapped softly and securely, but never too tight for extended periods of time. Wrapping should feel calming, not restrictive. I make sure babies can breathe freely and comfortably, with no pressure on their chest or airway.
All wrapping is done slowly and gently, and babies are always watched closely for comfort cues.
Poses That Never Compromise Airway or Comfort
Your baby will never be placed in a pose that restricts their airway or puts them in an unnatural position. Not every newborn is equally flexible, and that’s completely normal.
If a baby fusses or shows discomfort in a pose, we move on. Poses are never forced. Some babies may have experienced birth trauma or simply prefer certain positions over others. A safe newborn session is always baby-led.
No Unstable Props — Ever
Newborns are never placed in props that could tip, wobble, or shift. All props used in my studio are sturdy, grounded, and designed with newborn safety in mind.
If a setup doesn’t feel completely secure, it doesn’t get used. Period.
Sibling Safety Is Always a Priority
Including siblings in newborn photos can be incredibly sweet — but it also requires extra care. When young siblings are involved, a parent is always within arm’s reach.
Toddlers are never expected to fully support a newborn. Instead, parents help support the baby while allowing the sibling to participate safely. I also use alternatives like a raised wicker bassinet or posing setups that allow siblings to interact with baby without holding them. Safety always comes first, even if it means adjusting the plan. If you are bringing an older sibling to your newborn session, check out this blog post for how I incorporate siblings into the session flow.
Experience Matters More Than You Think
Safety isn’t about having a checklist — it’s about experience, instinct, and knowing when to pivot. I’ve been photographing newborns since 2012, and I’m also a mom of three. I understand newborn behavior, body language, and cues that signal when it’s time to pause, soothe, or change direction.
This level of experience is one of the reasons many parents choose a professional newborn photographer rather than attempting complex poses at home, or trusting a beginner photographer with their new baby.

What Parents Can Expect
Newborn sessions in my Raleigh studio are slow-paced, calm, and centered entirely around your baby’s needs. Feeding breaks, soothing, and flexibility are all part of the process. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is forced.

Your baby’s safety is always my first priority — everything else comes second. After all, I want you to leave your session feeling like I just handled your baby with the same care that I handled my three babies. If I overly sniff that sweet newborn smell, just let me be. I’m trying to remember a time when my house didn’t smell like teen body odor and I don’t get sass from a miniature version of myself (lol, kidding, but seriously.)
