I often have parents email me to do a lifestyle newborn session for their second (or third) child. This means that there most likely will be a toddler or young child at the session as well. So, I wanted to share some tips that have helped with making our lifestyle newborn session as stress free as possible.

First, keep in mind that they are still young and are adjusting to being a big sibling themselves. I promise that even if they are running in and out of the room, I will still manage to get some great images of them with their new baby brother/sister. The good thing about lifestyle newborn session in your home is that they have that freedom. They can go play, come back, go play, have a snack, etc. We can keep their attention for a few minutes and then let them go back to being a kid.

Second, let’s get the family/sibling shots out of the way first. Maybe you have talked to them about a lady coming by to take pictures and they’re excited. If we can get them in some pictures and then let them go play, it works great!

Third, as much as we want them to be on their best behavior, sometimes they just aren’t. And, that is ok. I am a mom of three (two of those being rambunctious boys) and so nothing phases me. We just roll with the punches! That is the luxury of having the session in your home.

My goal is to capture your family in the moment. Those first few weeks with a new baby are so crazy, and sometimes the images portray that. But, ultimately, your experience with me should be one with as little stress as possible. We can schedule them around what works for your family, so no strict time frames that we have to stick to. This family below had a very active little boy who was a little apprehensive about taking pictures. Mom came through with some snacks and he warmed up enough to take some cute pics!
