Why are digital images more expensive than prints?

You might be wondering why photographers charge so much for digital images.  Besides, they say, it doesn't take much extra work to email the image or put it on a CD.  Well, that may be true, but think of what a photographer is giving you when you get a digital image.  You now "own" that image (even though it is still under copyright protection by the photographer) and can do with it what you please.  Although it would be violating copyright, you could alter the color, change the crop, or edit it in other ways.  You can now forward it to your Aunt Mildred who may then forward it to your Cousin Larry and so on and so forth and then they now "own" it.  You can post it on Facebook or other social media sites and hopefully you'll mention my buisness name.  Digital images are great to have so you can always look back on this time in your life.  In addition, a digital image also comes with a print release.  This means you can make as many copies as you wish.  One digital image could produce multiple print images.  And for the real kicker, with that print release, you can also choose where to have your images printed, but not all labs are created equal.  Just look at this comparison from Erin Noie Photography.  I live in a small town and there are dozens of places where you can have your images printed.  These are a few of the more popular places.  Notice how the color is changed from place to place. print-comparison-color-small

So, with all that being said, there is a lot of value to a digital image which is why they cost more than a print.  Since we live in a digital world, each of my packages come with digital images AND prints from a professional lab.
